Fellowship training is a critical part of the education of all pediatric subspecialists. Following medical school and residency training, those who have chosen to focus on a pediatric subspecialty must undertake additional training within the specialty for a period of at least 3 years. During that time they balance clinical training with engagement in research to learn to be both practitioners and leaders in their chosen fields, who in turn can train others in the subspecialty and pursue independent research that furthers the field.
Connecticut Children’s faculty, who are the pediatrics and pediatric surgery faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, are fully committed to furthering their profession by sustaining and developing fellowship opportunities at the medical center for the next generation who wish to dedicate their lives to the care of children. However, public funding for fellowship training has declined significantly in recent years, putting existing fellowships as risk and greatly inhibiting the development of new fellowships, therefore philanthropy plays a critical role in funding these training positions, much as one would fund a scholarship for other kinds of education.
