The Storybook Gala celebrates the hundreds of thousands of children and families who are cared for each year at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. This year marks the 23rd year of this signature fundraising event which has generated more than $2.75 million for Connecticut Children's.
The special appearance of baseball legend and bestselling author, Cal Ripken, Jr., along with a cocktail reception, dinner, dancing to the sounds of ATLAS and unique live and silent auction ensure an exceptional experience for all who attend.
Proceeds from this signature event significantly enhance the investments of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Friends in the Medical Center. The Friends help fulfill Connecticut Children’s mission by funding state-of-the-art equipment and innovative programs that benefit patients, family and staff. Every corner of the Medical Center is touched as the Friends support strategic priorities, provide grants to assist patients and staff and award employee scholarships.
Gifts to the event’s spotlight program, Bid4Kidz, will benefit Orthopaedics at Connecticut Children’s.
About Our Featured Guest
Cal Ripken, Jr. is baseball's all-time Iron Man. He retired from baseball in 2001 after a hall of fame career that spanned 21 seasons, all with the Baltimore Orioles. While he's best known for his incredible streak of 2,632 consecutive games played, he also redefined the shortstop position.
Over the years, Cal's name has become synonymous with strength, character, perseverance and integrity. And now, he uses that experience to build the game from the grassroots level, both on the field and off.
Growing up in a baseball family and enjoying a legendary 21-year Hall of Fame career provided Cal with experience that helped make him a New York Times Bestseller.
His first book, The Only Way I Know, provides insight into what makes him tick: his commitment to the game, his family, his career and his team. His next four books have touched on his unique insights into the game of baseball, the story of the 1988 Orioles team that started 0-21, and advice for how parents can prepare young athletes for sports and for life.
In 2007, Cal shared his insights on hard work and success that can be applied on and off the field.
Since then, Cal, with Kevin Cowherd, has authored a series of young adult books that uses baseball as a theme to address issues faced every day by kids who play sports. The fourth book in the series, Squeeze Play, was released in March 2014.
