HuskyTHON: Empowering a Healthier Future for Kids Through Community and Dance

HuskyTHON at the University of Connecticut is one of the most inspiring examples of a Miracle Network Dance Marathon. As one of the nation’s top 10 college dance marathons and the largest Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon in the Northeast, HuskyTHON exemplifies the power of student-driven fundraising to make a lasting impact on pediatric healthcare at Connecticut Children’s, a member of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Each year, HuskyTHON unites thousands of students, alumni and supporters in a year-long fundraising effort that culminates in an 18-hour dance marathon, the “Night Of.” This celebration brings together students from across UConn’s campus, from every major and background, to dance and stand in solidarity with young patients who face health challenges every day. Through every dollar raised, HuskyTHON supports Connecticut Children’s ability to provide life-changing treatments, advanced research and compassionate care that transforms the lives of kids and families across the region.

A Record-Breaking Year of Impact in 2024

In 2024, HuskyTHON soared to new heights, marking its 25th anniversary by raising over $1.73 million and reaching more than 4,400 participants. This level of engagement places HuskyTHON as the largest Miracle Network Dance Marathon by participation and the second largest by funds raised, in the entire country, showing that when a community comes together with purpose, it can have an extraordinary impact.

Each contribution raised by HuskyTHON participants goes directly to Connecticut Children’s, fueling the Greatest Need Children’s Fund. A vital fund for everyday needs, critical programs and support resources that are not covered by insurance—and otherwise might be out of reach for families. The result is not only financial support but a deep sense of hope and relief for families facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.

The Magic of “Night of”

The spirit inside of the Greer Field House on the night of HuskyTHON is nearly palpable. Approximately 40 Miracle Children are invited to attend, and after walking under a balloon arch, they are welcomed by more than 4,000 cheering UConn students. Each patient is matched with a group of host students who ensure they are treated like a celebrity the entire time. Not only that, but the students fundraise for the opportunity to host a Miracle Child!

From the opening ceremony to the hourly 10-minute Morale Dances, and the inflatable activities to the closing ceremony, not one student participant sits down the entire time. If you haven’t seen it yourself, the spirit that the DJ brings to the crowd and the coordination that’s required to keep more than 4,000 college students plus 40 grateful patient families fed, hydrated and engaged for 18 hours is truly unimaginable. This event continues to exceed all expectations of a typical fundraiser run by college kids.

Through partnerships with elementary, middle and high schools, HuskyTHON supports JonaTHON events, which are mini dance marathons and fundraisers sponsored by local schools.
